Fall and Slip Prevention: Winter 2020-2021

Resident getting up from falling down using a walker for stability

With winter weather comes messy walkways and debris. Add in health conditions and you’ve got yourself one hazardous situation. These conditions lead to loss of balance, mobility, and strength for seniors.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that every second of every day, an older adult (age 65+) suffers a fall in the U.S.

Patients, families, and caregivers can reduce the risk of falls and slips by:

  • Working with your health care team on managing your medications and completing vision screenings
  • Hiring someone to help modify your home
  • Ask your health care team for referrals to physical therapists and community-based fall prevention programs
