Recognizing and Responding to an Opioid-Involved Breathing Emergency

Learning Objectives

At the completion of this activity learners will be able to:

  1. Describe how to effectively recognize and respond to an opioid-involved breathing emergency, including considerations with xylazine and illicitly manufactured fentanyl.
  2. Counsel patients and caregivers on how to use unregulated substances more safely and where to find recovery resources.
  3. Dispel myths and provide facts related to medications for opioid use disorder, passive fentanyl exposure, various naloxone formulations, and liability concerns.


Anita Jacobson, PharmD

Clinical Professor; Program Director, Community First Responder Program (CFRP)

University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy               

Dr. Anita Jacobson is a Clinical Professor at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and has worked as a pharmacist in a variety of patient care settings for 25 years. She is the Program Director of the Community First Responder Program (CFRP) which focuses on harm reduction, overdose education and naloxone outreach to at-risk populations. CFRP is also the hub for the Northeast Regional Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Center

The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education. This is an application-based educational activity. Pharmacists will receive 1 contact hour (0.1 CEUs) for the educational activity. No partial credit is available. UNIVERSAL ACTIVITY NUMBER (UAN): 0060-0000-23-040-L01-P. Expiration Date 05/04/2026.

Nursing This nursing continuing professional development activity was approved by the Northeast Multistate Division Education Unit, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation for up to 1.0 contact hour. NEMSD Approval # 557-790-081622. All participants will have the opportunity to evaluate the educational sessions, speakers and identify educational needs.


A program evaluation must be completed at www.uripharmacycpd.org within 60 days of the live program date (1/15/2024) in order to receive CE credit. CE credit will be transferred to the CPE Monitor upon successful completion of the program evaluation.
