Learning Objectives
At the completion of this activity learners will be able to:
- Describe how to effectively recognize and respond to an opioid-involved breathing emergency, including considerations with xylazine and illicitly manufactured fentanyl.
- Counsel patients and caregivers on how to use unregulated substances more safely and where to find recovery resources.
- Dispel myths and provide facts related to medications for opioid use disorder, passive fentanyl exposure, various naloxone formulations, and liability concerns.

Dr. Anita Jacobson is a Clinical Professor at the University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy and has worked as a pharmacist in a variety of patient care settings for 25 years. She is the Program Director of the Community First Responder Program (CFRP) which focuses on harm reduction, overdose education and naloxone outreach to at-risk populations. CFRP is also the hub for the Northeast Regional Rural Opioid Technical Assistance Center
The University of Rhode Island College of Pharmacy is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education as a provider of continuing pharmacy education.
