Our COVID-19 Workshop Series continues on Thursdays, 10:30 – 11:00 am.
Join us as Michele Carignan, RN and Courtney Lamothe, MSW, LCSW from Continuum Care of Rhode Island, discuss the importance of advance care conversations during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Learning Objectives:
- Recognize the importance and challenges of having advance care conversations with individuals and caregivers when a COVID-19 diagnosis presents.
- Understand that advance care conversations are reimbursable services, including audio-only telehealth conversations.
- Learn about one telehealth COVID-19 related advance care conversation that occurred within a critical care setting, which has implications for other settings.
- Identify a few resources that can help healthcare workers and care recipients with having advance care conversations.

Speakers
Michele Carignan, RN is a Registered Nurse and Hospital Transition Clinical Liaison for Continuum Care of Rhode Island, which offers hospice and palliative care. She has devoted over 20 years of her career raising the level of quality education in all entities of long-term care. She holds an Assisted Living Administrator’s License, has received Integrative Health Coach Training through Duke Integrative Medicine, and is a Certified Dementia Practitioner (CDP). Michele is a Regional Trainer for the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices. One of her proudest accomplishments is being the co-developer of the TIME (Trainings & Individualized Mindful Enhancements) program for a national hospice organization which focused on mindfulness trainings for staff and non-pharmacological interventions for patients. Courtney Lamothe, MSW, LCSW is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over a decade of experience in end-of-life care. As the Director of Program Development for Continuum Care of Rhode Island, much of her focus is spent on helping individuals and caregivers access palliative and hospice services, while also finding ways to help hospice recipients more deeply connect and communicate. She has worked with Second Wind Dreams® since 2013 as a Facilitator and Certified Trainer of the Virtual Dementia Tour®, and in 2019 became Certified in the Family Edition. Courtney owns and operates Self-Awareness, Let’s Talk (SALT), a lifestyle blog, well-being basin, and consultation agency that focuses on feelings and needs identification and caregiver support, particularly around having end-of-life conversations and suggesting non-pharmacological resources.
